In July 2024, San Diego Squared (SD2) and Illumina joined forces to host the SD2 High School Scholars Summer Internship Program, a transformative experience designed to inspire and equip the next generation of STEM innovators. Over the course of two weeks, this immersive program brought together talented high school students, including participants from Junior Achievement of San Diego, to engage in hands-on learning, professional development, and industry networking.

A Launchpad for Innovation

The internship program began with a series of enriching sessions aimed at fostering essential life and career skills. Scholars delved into financial literacy, personal branding, and professionalism while exploring their unique strengths using the CliftonStrengths Finder. These foundational workshops provided participants with tools to navigate their academic and professional journeys confidently.

STEM in Action

Innovation took center stage as scholars gained hands-on experience in Illumina’s state-of-the-art labs. Guided by over 100 Illumina staff members who dedicated their time to seminars and hands-on training, the students acquired practical lab skills such as pipetting and lab safety. These experiences provided a glimpse into the real-world applications of biotechnology, igniting a passion for STEM careers.

Building Connections and Confidence

Beyond the labs, the program emphasized the importance of community and well-being. A hike at Torrey Pines offered a chance for scholars to decompress and foster deeper connections with their peers.
