Katya Echazarreta Becomes First Mexican-Born Woman in Space

Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ aerospace company, successfully launched its fifth human-crewed spacecraft on June 4. Katya Echazarreta, an electrical engineer from Guadalajara, Mexico, was the first woman from her country to ever travel to space, making up one of the six members of the astronaut team.

West Texas’ New Shepard rocket launched the team for a 10-minute mission. The flight approached space’s edge in five minutes before parachuting into Texas. She beat out 7,000 candidates from 100 nations!

“I daydreamed about the possibility, but when it comes to something like this, you don’t really expect to be the one,” she said in an Instagram post shared by @spacehumanity.
