San Diego is home to an impressive community of STEM innovators whose work is shaping the future of science, technology, engineering, and medicine. From pioneering engineers to marine ecologists, these leaders are advancing knowledge, solving real-world problems, and inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals.

Meet six remarkable STEM leaders making an impact both locally and globally:

Olivia A. Graeve

A mechanical and aerospace engineer originally from Tijuana and the first Latina engineering professor at UC San Diego. She directs the CaliBaja Center for Resilient Materials & Systems, a binational research institute developing materials for extreme environments like space and nuclear reactors.

Dr. Octavio Aburto-Oropeza

A marine ecologist and photographer at Scripps Oceanography, whose research blends technology, ecology, and fisheries economics to promote sustainable marine ecosystems.

Dr. Anaí Novoa

A first-generation Mexican-American and a first-generation college student, Dr. Novoa is passionate about building a more inclusive climate for minority groups in higher education. After earning her Ph.D. in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, she went on to oversee different student programs at Scripps, where she now works to help other students achieve their goals.

Dr. Anela Choy

Dr. Choy is a biological oceanographer and associate professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where she researches in the open ocean to discover how organic matter connects species. Using her research, she shows the impact of climate change and commercial fishing on our oceans.

Dr. JoAnn Trejo

A pharmacologist and cell biologist at UC San Diego’s School of Medicine, Dr. Trejo is a leader in the scientific community. She is a well-loved mentor and has trained over 100 scientists, working to lift up the next generation of STEM professionals.

Carlos Ramirez

Carlos Ramirez is a partner at Cooley LLP, where he advises technology and life sciences companies on corporate and securities matters, including financings, mergers and acquisitions, and governance. A committed advocate for diversity and inclusion, Carlos serves on Cooley’s diversity committee and was recognized by the Hispanic National Bar Association as a “Top Lawyer Under 40.” As a board member of San Diego Squared (SD2), he brings his experience as a first-generation professional to support underrepresented students in STEM, helping them access mentorship, education, and career opportunities.
